Table of Contents

My science project determines the best motor oil spill absorbent. Because cat litter is absorbent, it will absorb the motor oil spill best.

Methods/Materials

Pour 1 tablespoon oil into all 4 plastic lids using measuring spoons. Oil lid base. Use a measuring spoon to heap 1 tablespoon of material on top. 24-hour wait. Scoop the material off and use a dropper to measure absorption. Subtract the remaining oil from the initial tablespoon. Repeat 6 times.

Results

Dirt outperformed sawdust in 3 of 6 trials. Sawdust absorbed best in the other 3 trials. Cat litter was less absorbent than dirt and sawdust but still good. Sand had the lowest absorption rate.

Conclusions

Dirt was the most absorbent of the four materials I tested. I was surprised that yard dirt absorbs oil. Trial 1 showed that dirt was the least absorbent, so I concluded that its moisture content may have affected oil absorption. Sawdust followed. My second recommendation. It depends on the cat litter, but it worked okay. Clay cat litter. Some silica/sand-based types absorb better. Sand absorbed the least. Instead of absorbing, the oil pooled around the sand. Dirt absorbs motor oil best. Dirt is more absorbent than cat litter. Dir types may affect absorption. Clay-like dirt absorbs less than dry dirt. Finally, you don’t need to buy cat litter, sand, or sawdust. Dig some extra dry dirt from your garden and sprinkle it on your motor oil spill to solve the problem.
